Evidence-based insights for nurturing mind, body and spirit.

What does ‘holistic wellness’ mean? For many, it’s shorthand for ‘alternative medicine’ or ‘alternative lifestyle’. Herbal remedies, yoga, acupuncture or meditation CAN form part of a holistic approach to wellbeing… but a truly holistic approach extends far beyond alternative methods.

Through countless scientific studies, we now understand that mind, body and spirit are all intrinsically linked. What affects our body can impact our mental health, and vice versa. Consider the scientifically-proven impact that long-term stress has on physical health. Along with physical manifestations such as headaches or muscular tension, long-term stress exacerbates just about every health condition – everything from asthma to Alzheimer’s.

This relatively new understanding is a significant departure from the traditional Western approach to medicine, which once centred only on physical health. It was concerned with treating the physical symptoms, rather than considering all parts of person (mind, body and spirit) to address the underlying problem.

Simply put, a holistic approach to wellbeing nurtures our emotional health, mental health and physical health. Holistic wellbeing is not an ‘alternative’ approach – it is a ‘whole person’ approach, with the benefits backed by scientific evidence.

With a knack of translating technical ‘science speak’ into plain English, Dr Helena presents research and neuroscientific findings with a strong emphasis on how they can be applied to wellbeing. She loves to share her knowledge in a way that makes a real impact in the lives of many.

If you’re unsure about the meaning of ‘neuroscientific’, rest assured, you’re not alone. Simply put, neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system – particularly with how it relates to behaviour and learning.
